Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center announced that high doses and long-term use of maté tea increase the risk of prostate, bladder, mouth, esophagus, lung and neck cancers. This tea has been found to contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are also found in grilled meats and tobacco smoke. As a result of the studies, it was discovered that long-term dependence on this carcinogen can have serious effects on the immune, reproductive and neurological systems. The publication called Healthline also announced that the consumption of this tea may increase the risk of cancer. A study done in Uruguay found data that people who consume heavy maté are 60% more likely to develop lung cancer than those who consume lightly. This study was also published in the Cancer Epidemiology Biomarker and Prevention journal, and several experiments were conducted on 1000 Uruguayan adults. Finally, the findings suggested that consuming too much of this tea could increase a person’s risk of both respiratory and digestive cancers. It was also stated that patients are more likely to be diagnosed with a rare type of “small cell lung cancer”.
